Chronic sinusitis occurs when the lining of the sinuses become inflamed, thus preventing the sinuses from appropriately draining over an extended period of time. While the condition may be treated with antibiotics, Balloon Sinuplasty is an effective, minimally invasive alternative for patients who are not responding well to antibiotic treatment. It is a safe and effective way to open the blocked sinuses, thus facilitating proper drainage and providing immense physical relief.
Do I have chronic sinusitis?
Chronic sinusitis & acute sinusitis have the same symptoms. The difference between them is the frequency of occurrence. Acute sinusitis often follows a common cold or an allergy attack and is a temporary condition. Chronic sinusitis is a condition where the symptoms reoccur often or in some cases, never go away.
The most common symptoms of sinusitis are:
- Sinus headache
- Swelling and pain around the eyes, nose, cheeks and forehead
- Nausea
- Bad breath
- Pain in the ears
- Fatigue
- Loss of the sense of smell or taste
- Pain in the jaw or upper teeth
- Coughing
Chronic sinusitis is a condition that is treated in many ways. Natural treatments such as inhaling steam or using a sinus rinse can sometimes provide relief. Decongestants give temporary relief but can cause even worse congestion if improperly used. A doctor can prescribe antibiotics if an infection is present or a steroid nasal spray for an inflamed sinus lining. It is estimated that over 20% of chronic sinusitis patients do not respond to these treatments.
People suffering with these symptoms experience a diminished quality of life that can often be resolved by receiving Balloon Sinuplasty. Patients who wish to be evaluated should contact Dr. Sadati for a definite diagnosis.

PROVIDING RELIEF FROM CHRONIC SINUSITIS
Balloon Sinuplasty is a safe and effective surgical option for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. Using an endoscopic, catheter-based system, the procedure involves the use of tiny balloons to open blocked sinuses, restore normal sinus drainage and deliver relief from uncomfortable symptoms. As a minimally invasive procedure performed in an outpatient setting, recovery time and patient pain are minimal.
The procedure
Prior to 2005 when the FDA approved the use of the device used in Balloon Sinuplasty, ENTs had only one choice in surgical intervention; functional endoscopic sinus surgery or FESS. This procedure involves removing bone and tissue from the nose to open the sinus passage and is a valid treatment for chronic sinusitis caused by nasal polyps or a deviated septum rather than infection.
For patients suffering from blocked sinus passages due to infection, FESS can be delayed and may never been needed. Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done under local anesthesia in Dr. Sadati’s Newport Beach office. This avoids the risks and increased recovery time associated with general anesthesia.
The goal is to open the sinus passage so that mucus can drain naturally. This allows the sinus cavity to warm and moisturize the air we breathe. The procedure restructures the passage so that it is wider and therefore able to function properly. The balloon catheter does this without damaging the integrity of the lining in the sinus cavity.
The procedure is very straightforward. After patients have received local anesthesia and are comfortable a narrow balloon catheter is inserted into the sinus cavity. Once in place, the balloon is gently inflated until the sinus passage is opened.
The next step is to flush the sinus cavity with a saline solution which expels built up mucus and infected fluid, thus relieving pressure and cleaning the sinus cavity. Finally the catheter is removed leaving the passage open.
The procedure takes a little more than an hour and recovery time is minimal. Patients are usually able to return to their normal activities within 2 days.
Balloon Sinuplasty provides long lasting relief of symptoms
In one case study of over 1,000 patients, 95% reported improvement in their symptoms 9 months following surgery. A separate study reported symptom improvement in patients 2 years after surgery.
Having Balloon Sinuplasty does not eliminate other options for treatment and can be redone if needed. It is safe enough for children and is covered by most insurance and Medicare.
With countless patients experiencing relief from physical symptoms and enjoying a higher quality of life without the burden of chronic sinusitis, Dr. Sadati is widely recognized for delivering among the safest and most effective procedure available.
